It’s Halloween again, the much debated yearly celebration. Some of us enjoy the day, while others would rather lock our doors and turn off the porch light. No matter your opinion, the fact is, more people will come to your door on October 31st than any other night of the year. What a great opportunity to be Christ to your community. Greet people, offer them something warm to drink, shake hands, offer a smile. But, whatever you do, don’t be THAT house. Keep your porch light on, welcome people and be a light to your community.

We are a broken and sinful people. People in need of a Savior. Jesus became that for us by allowing His body to be broken and His blood to be poured out on the cross. Sometimes it's hard to find the words to express just how grateful we are for our Mom. She's taught us, fed us, nurtured us and disciplined us all because she loves us. “Dear Mom” is an open letter of thanks to all the Mom's who ever got up in the middle of the night, sat through a baseball game, fed a hungry group of teenagers or hugged us when we had a broken heart. As we remember MLK and the peaceful pursuit for equality and justice, let us remember what the scriptures say: “Blessed are the peace makers, for they will be called the children of God”.

The new year is a time to rededicate ourselves to the cause of Christ and the glory of God. It’s a time to hit our knees, surrender our will and live out our faith. It’s a time to come before God in worship, giving Him the honor He deserves. This year, it’s time to fix our gaze on Jesus and live life for Him and Him alone.

A lot has happened in one year. We’ve seen terrorism dominate the news and genocide and war all over the world. We’ve seen the racial divide grow larger by the day and witnessed unspeakable tragedies. Sometimes, life here on earth seems hopeless. As we come to the New Year, we need to stop and ask one question. Where does our hope come from? Real hope is found in God…who makes all things new.

This year has been a journey for us all. For some the road has brought joy and for others…pain. We look and see a broken world and are stunned by the chaos around us. Our hearts beat to the rhythm of uncertainty. As a new year begins, let us remember to turn our eyes upon Jesus. To look full in His wonderful face. Let us watch as the things of earth are dimmed by the light of His glory and grace.

Mary and Joseph traveled a great distance to get to Bethlehem. At the end of their journey, they were able to look at the face of the promised Messiah. The Wise Men traveled for the purpose of worshipping the only Son of God. This Christmas we will travel. We will head to church to celebrate the birth of our Savior. We will gather together to remember the gift of God’s grace. This Christmas, as the Wise Men did 2000 years ago…we will come to adore Jesus.

Christmas is so much more than a holiday. It’s more than family get togethers, presents under the tree and lights hanging on the house. Christmas is about God reaching down from Heaven. It’s about the birth of Jesus, our Savior. It’s about the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Christmas is about grace and the promise of eternity. Simply put, Christmas is about Jesus.
