The sound of God taking back the world He loved. Darkness had been flooded with light, fear had been overtaken by hope. and death had been swallowed in victory. In that moment, sin lost its power, the grave lost its sting, and evil was left broken in defeat. He is victorious. He is triumphant. He is risen. Jesus…is alive.

Freedom. It’s something we cherish in this country. The idea of a free society is embedded into the very core of our Nation. Many have died defending it, and many have fought diligently to preserve it. So where has it gone? We have become a nation bound by division, chained by hatred, and consumed by selfishness. Does this look like freedom? The Bible tells us we are called to be free. But it also says to use that freedom to serve one another humbly, in love. Maybe that’s what we’re missing in America. Today we celebrate Independence Day. Perhaps it’s time we recognize that true independence is found only in a lasting dependence on God. For where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.

We’ve seen a lot this year. Hatred and division, acceptance and hope. Through it all, the one constant, has been Jesus. He has never left us or forsaken us. He is the same today as He was yesterday. Our strength when we are weak and our courage when we are afraid. As we begin a New Year, let us strive to be more like Jesus. To love more, serve better, stand stronger and care constantly. This is our calling…This is a New Year!
